Over the last week i decided to treat my design thesis as a film set. My design thesis is a Cyborg Embassy. Yet, perhaps due to spending time in Las Vegas over the summer, my judgement had become clouded and a Diplomatic mission became a hybrid of an Embassy club, Embassy hotel suite and a gentleman’s leisure/pleasure dome [I still think i could do a great final year project using these 3 components . . . but for now this has been consigned to the ‘vault of great ideas for another day’]. I’d looked at Dogville, the 2003 Danish drama film written and directed by Lars von Trier. And then decided to look at precedents for set decoration, from Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut amongst others. The idea was to construct a series of spaces/sets for my film, in which my Cyborgs would exist, relax, unwind and re-count tales of their lives in a manner described in my earlier post regarding my written thesis’ format.
After yesterday’s tutorial though i can see that i was taking, to a certain extent, the easy way out. Or to be more exact, perhaps looking at phase 3 of my project before dealing with the intricacies of phases 1 & 2. So it goes without saying that there is quite a lot to do for next week’s crit. In the meantime here are a few of the portfolio sheets [now relegated to the appendix] from last week.
